Union Gospel Thrift Store

Welcome to the world of the Union Gospel Thrift Store, where every purchase and donation becomes a catalyst for change. Located in the heart of the Downtown Eastside, the Union Gospel (UGM) Thrift Store stands as a beacon of hope and transformation, operating as a social enterprise that impacts lives and uplifts communities.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into the incredible journey of the UGM Thrift Store, exploring its mission, community impact, unique programs, and how it seamlessly integrates social good with sustainable business practices.

The Mission: Compassion Meets Commerce

At its core, the UGM Thrift Store embodies the spirit of giving and community support. Unlike typical retail stores, the UGM Thrift Store is dedicated to a mission far more significant than profit. Here’s how it works:

  • Donations First, Sales Second: Before selling any donated items, the store checks its Community Needs List and consults with program staff to ensure that donations are first distributed free of charge to community members in need.

  • Revenue for a Cause: Items unsuitable for direct distribution are sold at the store, with 100% of the proceeds reinvested into UGM’s life-changing programs and services.

Community Impact: Union Gospel Thrift Store has More!

The Union Gospel Thrift Store isn’t just about affordable shopping and creating lasting change. Here’s a closer look at its multifaceted community impact:

1.Support for Vulnerable Populations:

  • Distribution of Essentials: Essential items such as clothing, shoes, and household goods are free to community members, ensuring everyone can access basic necessities.
  • Affordable Shopping: For items sold, the thrift store offers a low-cost retail experience, making it accessible for those with limited financial resources.

2.Empowerment Through Employment:

  • Thrift Store Internship Program: This program employs individuals who have completed UGM’s Recovery Programs, providing valuable work experience and a pathway to stable employment.

  • Repair to Wear Program: Participants gain skills in repairing damaged clothing, turning unsellable items into valuable goods, and learning marketable skills.

3. Environmental Sustainability:

  • Reducing Waste: By accepting a wide range of donations and focusing on repairing and reselling items, the UGM Thrift Store significantly reduces waste, promoting a circular economy.

Accepted Donations: What You Can Give

The Union Gospel Thrift Store thrives on the generosity of its donors. Here’s a list of items they gratefully accept:

  • Clothing and Accessories: Men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, and jewellery.

  • Household Items: Linens (bedding, towels, curtains), small household items, antiques, and collectables.

  • Entertainment: Books (with exceptions), CDs, DVDs, records, and musical instruments (with exceptions).
