The word empowerment also means equip or supply with an ability; hence women empowerment has to do with increased knowledge of the spiritual, political, social or economic strength of the Indian women.
The empowerment in totality calls for an immediate attention towards various social evils that are plaguing Indian women such as; workforce participation, land & property rights, sexual harassment, dowry, child marriage, female infanticides, selective sex abortions, domestic violence, human trafficking, family planning & sanitation, etc.
UGM along with its network NPOs/NGOs strategically strives in identifying & addressing some of the above key women issues at community level, through our various initiative as mentioned below. May we humbly request you to read through and support us. Your support will certainly make a huge difference.
TAILORING CENTER EMPOWERS YOUNG WOMEN
This initiative impacts garment making tailoring trade for the livelihood of 10 deprived women (per batch). This is 6 months training, where trainees attend classes for 4hrs on a daily basis for both theory and practical lessons. Successful learners are gifted with a Tailoring machine, thus empowered to make earning through the means of making/stitching garments.
IMPACT: Do you wonder how this simple garment making skill empowers and transforms ordinary women? Just think of these facts:
Training imparts the trainees with the skill & Knowledge to draft, cut, stitch and finish simple garments for ladies, gents & children. Now the new world of work opportunity is at their doorstep
These young women, once exploited, confined to indoors considering liability, shall gain self-confidence and a new image as they become financial contributors to their respective families.
This reduces gender inequality and economic exploitation of women in the age group of 18 to 30 belonging to weaker section, oppressed class, migrants, or marginalised among the target community while they are now financially sustained
WOMEN HEALTH WORKERS, AND TRANSFORM RURAL INDIA.
Health is a huge area of need in India as millions of people perishes each day due to diseases that can be easily prevented or treated successfully in the early stages. Just image that:
- There are 6, 60,000 villages in India
- 73% of Indians live in these Villages.
- But…80% Health Workers/Professionals are in cities.
In India, it is said, “if you educate a man you educate a person, but if you educate a woman you educate a family”.Families and thereby villages can be transformed if one women health worker is trained and supported for minimum three years. Community Health Worker training is provided in partnership with prestigious Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, where each selected community health worker would be trained and equipped with medical skills to prevent and treat illness most of the health problems at communities level.
UGM along with its network NPOs/NGOs continuously identifies key community workers, working in remote parts of North India, where there are very primitive or no health facilities available. Your support would make a huge difference as you will find that:
- Only women can fully understand & address another women’s health issues
